Obituary

Mitchell P. Fava, of Stoneham passed away Friday October 12, 2001 after a brief illness. He was 87 years of age.

Born in Ravine, Italy in 1914, Mitchell (Marchello) Fava immigrated to America at the age of 5, settling in Fitchburg, MA and later attending Fitchburg State Teacher’s College. He served 4 years in the U.S. Army as a member of the 20th Field Hospital which was stationed in England, France, Holland, Germany, and the Aleutian Islands. He derived enjoyment from exchanging notes with his army buddies every Christmas.

After his military service was over, he started his career teaching high-school mathematics in Bristol, Ct., and Melrose, MA for over 40 years. He was married to the late Phyllis (Trodella) and they were the devoted parents of three children, Mitch Jr., of Arlington, an electrical engineer, George, an opthalmologist in Lebanon, PA, and Linda Maloney of Stoneham, a programmer/analyst. George and his wife Margaret have four children: Anthony, Christina, Natalie, and George Jr. Visits to Lebanon, as well as four memorable trips to Italy, were highlights in Mitchell’s life.

Mitchell enjoyed golfing until he became legally blind from macular degeneration. But that did not stop him from being an avid Red Sox fan, never losing hope for that elusive pennant. For the past 5 years, Mitch courageously endured dialysis treatments, but was still able to enjoy life thank to expert medical care and the support of wonderful relatives and friends, for which his family will always be grateful.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend calling hours at the Barile Family Funeral Home 482 Main St. (Rte. 28) STONEHAM on Monday 4-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church 71 Central St. Stoneham on Tuesday October 16th at 10 a.m. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
