Parents: Patrick Joseph Gavin & Katherine M. Nagle		When David Robert Gavin was born on July 28, 1914, in Roxbury, Massachusetts, his father, Patrick, was 32 and his mother, Kathryn, was 31. He had two sons and three daughters with Mary Hogan. He died on June 26, 1990, in Dennis, Massachusetts, at the age of 75.

Obituary Teacher, coach at Melrose High A funeral Mass will be said at 10a.m. tomorrow at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, in Greenwood at the Melrose Wakefield line, for David R Gavin, of Dennis, longtime coach and teacher at Melrose High School. Mr. Gavin, 79, died at home Tuesday after a long illness. He taught math for 39 years at Melrose High and coached the football, hockey and baseball teams there. Mr. Gavin guided Melrose to the Class A football championship in 1946. He was born in Dorchester and graduated from Boston Latin in 1933 before attending Holy Cross, where he was named to the All-Eastern and All-American football teams in 1937. He received his Master's degree in education from Boston University. He was a member of the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame and was past president of the Massachusetts Coaches association. He leaves his wife, Mary (Hogan); two sons, David R. Jr. of Texas and John M. of Virginia; three daughters, Patricia M. George of Reading, Carol A Lavery of New York and Jane G. Cann of Stoneham; and 15 grandchildren. Boston Globe, 6/29/1990
