Michael Glynn Obituary Michael
(Mike) B. Glynn, age 78, of Rowley MA , died on
Thursday, November 14, 2019 in Lincoln MA. He was born
to Joseph and Hilda (Bolster) Glynn on July 5, 1941 in
Reading MA. Michael attended Huntington Prep School,
where his track team won the Penn State Relays in
1960. He went on to Northeastern University, where he
continued to pursue his passion for running and
received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965. After
graduating Northeastern, Michael started his long
teaching career in Melrose MA at the Roosevelt Junior
High School, where he also created a Drama Club for
the students. He went on to teach English and Drama at
Melrose High School until his retirement, where he
shared his many skills in coaching the drama club, as
well as cross country and track.
Michael had a unique ability to reach those students
most needing guidance. His rebel and free thinking
spirit ran through his many loves: running (the Boston
Marathon 3 times, one in sub 3 hours); hunting (with
his brother and good friends); the ocean ( in a tuna
fishing experience he landed a 688 pound tuna, with
his wife Diane landing a 514 lb.); cars (he loved
working on his Jaguars and Rovers and had incredible
aptitude as a mechanic, body work and painting as
well); animals (a natural dog whisperer and lover, he
learned and worked closely with a veterinarian);
nature, the environment and hiking many of NHs 4000
footers (even in the winter); language, communication
and books (Moby Dick and Walden among his favorites);
music and concerts; and Boston sports teams.
A man of peace and wisdom, his kindness, intelligence,
and compassionate nature touched so many in his life.
Whether a student losing direction, an athlete needing
motivation, or a downcast spirit needing support,
Michael tapped into the place in each that changed the
direction of their lives.
Michael is survived by his wife, Penelope, of Rowley
MA, his brother William (Bill) of Wellington, Maine,
many nieces and nephews, and many friends, including
his former wife, Diane Ingalls. He was predeceased by
his parents, his sisters, Janice McMelville and Julia
Fairbanks, his brother Alan, and his partner Ruthann
Arbeit.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring.
