When Joseph Daniell Hoague was born on August 2, 1918, in Brookline, Massachusetts, his father, Theodore, was 42 and his mother, Euphemia, was 25. He married Ann Lauderburn Conant in 1939 in Waltham, Massachusetts. They had seven children during their marriage. He died on January 4, 1991, in Lakeville, Massachusetts, at the age of 72, and was buried in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

 Joe Hoague served in the US Navy as a LT JG during World War II.

Joseph Daniell Hoague was a professional American football player in the National Football League with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and later the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh Steagles, and the Boston Yanks. Prior to joining the NFL, Hoague played college football at Colgate University.

 oe Hoague, 72, Melrose High Football coach and athletic director from 1959-1980 who played fullback for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Boston Yanks in the '40's.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, Melrose for Joseph D. Hoague, former director of athletics and football coach at Melrose High School from 1959 until his retirement in 1980.  Mr. Hoague died Friday of stomach cancer at his home in Lakeville.  He was 72. 

Born in Brookline, Mr. Hoague was a 1941 graduate of Colgate University and received a Master's degree from Boston University.  At Colgate, Mr. Hoague was a football letterman and was the first Colgate player to participate in the Army-Navy football game.  From 1941-42, he played professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers and later, for the Boston Yankees.  From 1947 to 1951, Mr. Hoague was the Taunton High School football coach and eight years later held the same position at Natick High School.  In the 1970's, Mr. Hoague was named coach of th year by the New England Officials Association.  In 1978, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Football Coaches' Association hall of fame and, in 1990, into the Colgate University Athletics hall of honor. 

He leaves his wife, Ann (Conant); three sons, Joseph D. of Nantucket, Theodore 2d of Laneville, and Douglas E. of Flagstaff, Ariz.; four daughters, Carolyn B. Tryder of Melrose, Joann M. Jones of Calif., Sara B. Cassin of Goffstown N.H. and Ann Conant Kruger 2d of North Andover; two sisters, Mary of England and Helen Houston of Wisconsin; and 11 grandchildren. 

Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
