Man found
hanged in police cell
Somerville police said they took Robert Nunes 22, into
protective custody because of excessive drinking about 1
a.m. yesterday. Fifteen minutes later they found
him hanged in his cell. He was dead on arrival at
Somerville hospital. "He was a handsome kid, a
good kid. He'd help me anytime I needed him." said
Aino Labadine, an elderly invalid whose apartment at 12
East Cross st., Somerville, is in the same three-decker
where Nunes lived. Nunes and some friends were
partying in his third floor apartment, the three
neighbors said, when just before midnight his car,
parked across the street, was towed by police. It
did not have an inspection sticker as required by May
15, police said. Later, Nunes tried to remove his
car, an old Mustang, from the Somerville garage to which
it had been towed, without paying the towing fee,
according to Lt. Louis Carucci. Police took him
into protective custody, but did not arrest him, Carucci
said. Nunes who had worked odd jobs since losing
his job recently as an auto mechanic, was put into a
cell at the police station. Fifteen minutes later,
he was found hanging by his shirt which had been tied to
a cell bar. He died from "Asphyxiation caused by
self-inflicted strangulation" according to the Middlesex
County Medical Examiner Jose Sanchez after an
Autopsy. Nunes' survivors include his mother,
Helen Gomes of Melrose, and a sister. Funeral
arrangements were incomplete last night.
