62-year-old Francis Stamegna of Melrose identified as victim in fatal pedestrian crash in Everett

The 62-year-old man killed in a pedestrian crash on Route 16 in Everett on Friday night has been identified as Francis Stamegna of Melrose, the Massachusetts State Police said.

Troopers responded to Route 16, also known as Revere Beach Parkway, in Everett Friday around 9:30 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian crash. Authorities said a 2012 Dodge Charger was traveling westbound on Route 16 in the right travel lane, approaching the intersection with Vine Street. Westbound traffic had a green light at the intersection.

At the same time, two pedestrians, a man and a woman, were running across Route 16 from south to north.

"The pedestrians ran across all lanes of eastbound traffic and were crossing the westbound lanes when the male pedestrian was struck by the Charger in the right lane," state police said. "The female pedestrian was not struck. Preliminary investigation indicates that the pedestrians were crossing against the pedestrian signals at the intersection."

Stamegna was taken to Whidden Hospital in Everett, where he later was pronounced dead. The driver of the Charger, a 24-year-old man from Utah, remained at the scene of the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the crash. MassLive 9/1/19
